What Does Tapatap Mean?

April 12, 2007

We get asked this question a lot. So how better to start than to explain the significance of our name? Well, we didn’t spend tens of thousands of dollars on over-priced “experts” to come up with it. Instead, we focused on a few key criteria in the following order:

The name had to be memorable. At first we were a bit worried when people started calling us bad names. This was usually the result of telemarketers hounding us after we registered our business. They started asking for non-existent people who worked for “Papatapalapamap” or some other such nonsense. But when people we knew started saying “that’s an awesome name” and four year old kids started running around saying it over and over, we new we had a good one. It does kind of roll off the tongue.

It had to be easy to enter on a phone. Look at your phone keypad. T-A-P-A-T-A-P. All first letters on your phone keypad. 8-2-7-2-8-2-7. No need to triple-tap to enter our name on your mobile browser. Okay, okay, we weren’t the first company to ever think of this, but it’s still a great idea!

The domain had to be available. Finding a cool name that isn’t being squatted on these days is nearly impossible! We must have searched at least a hundred different names that we liked only to find generic place holder pages, or worse, nothing at all. Of course, as soon as we showed interest, the domain owners instantly saw stratospheric value. We’d rather save our money for important things like dry erase markers and toilet paper.

It had to have subliminal qualities. When you use our service on the web and on your phone, every key press is a “tap”. So by typing or using your phone, you are in essence repeating our name too. Over and over and over again. Try it. And then stop thinking about it…. or keep thinking about it but stop remembering that you are. Good luck!
